This Is an Introduction to one of my favorite Afro-Cuban rhythms called Bembe.
Here's a fun challenge! This is an idea that I got from great NYC drummer/teacher Cliff Almond. You take a basic paradiddle (RLRR LRLL) and work it through metric modulation with a half note click. I think I did this at 60bpm. It's a great way to free your mind from the time and learn how to play a mixed sticking through different groupings. It sounds really interesting spread out over the kit. Check it out and try it!
Here is an example of Afro Cuban 3:2 rhumba clave on the Hi Hat, along with a Mambo bell pattern in a funk context. This is a fun groove to play and Is great for independence!
North African rhythms are a great way to expand your 6/8 or 12/8 rhythmic palette. Here's a variation on a style called "Maghreb".
